I saw the Oxymorons – an improv comedy troupe – last Sunday, and my cheeks still hurt from smiling and laughing.
Holy cow. What a great time! It was the perfect way to beat the dreaded Sunday scaries and start the week off on a high note. Laughter really is contagious, and it’s a great feeling to hear other people laughing and laugh with them.
The Oxymorons consist of Toby Bradbury, Liz Curtis, Josh Miller, Andy Shaw, Sara Shaw and Randy Stamm. The six work so well together, feeding off each other’s wit, puns, and jokes. Each member brings a different style and sense of humor to the stage, and it blends together for a great show. One funny person is great, but six funny people make for an absolute blast.
The show is very a la “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” with quick games and scenes that include audience participation and suggestions. It’s fast-paced, and the gang is great at thinking on their feet to deliver big laughs without skipping a beat.
There are puns, there are funny charades, there are impressions — it has everything you need for a laugh, and I was in tears most of the night from laughing so hard. My family and friends know I get what I call the “gigs,” where I can stop laughing, and I had a serious case of the gigs during the show.
Special thanks to Toby for the invite, it was a great night, and I’m glad I got to meet the group. The only thing better than a funny person is a nice funny person and everyone I met was awesome!
Obviously, I definitely recommend checking out the Oxymorons! They’re at the Harrisburg Comedy Zone on the second Sunday of every month (next show is their 8th anniversary show on Sept. 9). You can buy your tickets online or at the door. They’ll be at the York Fringe Festival on Aug. 24, too.
You can also catch Toby and Liz in Hijacked at Gamut Theatre this Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2:30 pm. It’s a “choose your own play,” so it’s bound to be super interesting!
P.S. It’s worth noting that the Harrisburg Comedy Zone is located in Boomerang Bar and Grill, so you can grab dinner and drinks before the show starts or eat while you watch. Drinks, snacks and laughs — it’s a great date night idea!
